"Well, I think it should be a right for every American. In a country as wealthy as ours, for us to help people who are going bankrupt because they can't pay their medical bills" Obama.
I, like Obama, believe that health care is a right, I know that some people take advantage of health care , but the people that really need it and use it and are grateful for it. Like for my family there was one point when we had to choose between getting food for that week or buying Alex's drugs. Sometimes we would have to go to food banks when we would choose to buy Alex's drugs. The drugs we had to buy for Alex were not like Tylenol or Aspirin, these drugs are what kept him alive and under control. This should be a right because these are things that keep people alive like food and water and if it is a right for these basic needs, isn't it also a right for medicine?
Thank god my brother has Medicaid. This is a program that pretty much pays for all the things we need for both diabetes and his disability. It is so hard for my family to rely on the government in this way because it is such a fragile recourse, and we know that things could happen at any moment. There was one time when we got a letter in the mail saying that we did not qualify for Medicaid any more. We all started freaking out so we called them and they were like sorry you still have it.
There are so many things that I feel need to be changed about health care in this country, like it needs to be more accessible to everyone. If health care were more accessible there would be a lot less people on the streets because they would not have to pay as much for medications and would have money to pay other bills. Also I do not feel like the government really cares about my family and our need for health care, they just give it to us and not really know how it helps us. I bet if they knew how it really helped the families that had it they would make it more accessible and care more about their citizens needs.
To me Alex is not just a sibling. He is not just my twin. He is my teacher, he has taught me so much about the person I want to be. About the fact I do not want to judge people because we are not all perfect. And most people that judge others are just trying to make themselves feel better and you should not take it personally. He has also shaped my beliefs. Not only my beliefs about faith or family but also my beliefs about politics, like health care and education. I know that there are always going to be people that are going to judge people that have special needs, I guess all I want is for people to understand that they are people too, they feel, care and have moments just like us. Also if you ever see a family and it looks like they need help please ask them, the worst thing that can happen is they can say no.
